Today’s very grateful design comes from our first at Designer First and is a great Clean & Minimal Blog Design PSD template. This little web design packages comes. My name is Gregory Kennedy and I started here at LiveJournal about 4 months ago as the new. CREATE BLOG; English (en. New Template for LJ Design Community. How to Migrate from Joomla, Drupal, Live. Journal and Blogger to Word. Press. Word. Press. Word. Press based websites are rapidly growing each day for a good reason. Each server account allows users to maintain the best features of social blogging along with more elaborate design concepts that a personal website offers. The software offers several plug- ins that allow for other social integration as well, such as Facebook and Twitter commenting and sharing. The free software also allows for things such as custom menus, pages, image galleries, and shopping carts. Because you are hosting the website, you may be able to do things with the website that would normally be restricted or banned when going through a blogging host site like Blogger or Live. Journal. The interface and basic setup is also more convenient and user- friendly than Joomla or Drupal is for people with little or no programming knowledge. Switching to Word. Press Has Never Been Easier. Switching over to Word. Press is actually quite easy in comparison to completely building a website using traditional coding such as HTML. When some move off of their cookie cutter blog sites and onto a site that requires more programming, they often struggle with installation and confusion using My. SQL. With the Word. Press structure, the ability to combine templates with their own coding and add custom plug- ins to create their sites with ease, rather than just being reliant on coding. This is also excellent from a design perspective, as browsing the templates and available plug- ins can often spark the imagination. Before making the switch from any server, creating a backup of previous work is imperative. Most servers will allow a backup to be performed easily, the procedures are just slightly different. By creating a backup onto a hard drive, the integration can be compared again and again.
Though Word. Press is the top choice for many bloggers, those thinking about integrating should also review the major blogging services available to them and ensure that Word. Press is the best option for their blog. Comparing Blogging Services. Making the decision to migrate to Word. Press should not be taken lightly. Some benefits are available with each blogging website that may not be available once fully integrated into Word. Press. Blogger. Blogger is a continent choice for users who want to casually blog using services provided through Google. A major benefit of this is less accounts to remember and easier troubleshooting. The blog is fully compatible with Google Docs and Google +. Blogs through Blogger, though limited, can be set up in under five minutes. Another major benefit is that Google will do a large amount of marketing using their search engines and there is a Google Ads feature that allows popular blogs to begin making money quickly, rather than having to go through a secondary company, such as Commission Junction, to create revenue. The limitation on the account, however, is that templates are much more basic and limiting in comparison to Word. Press. While layouts can be changed using a drag and drop format, it is much more difficult to find a unique template on the website. Word. Press offers thousands of templates that can be further customized. They also feature better previews on how the blog will look once the template is implemented. Joomla. Joomla is a content manager system, or CMS, that helps bloggers to organize their content. The software offers interesting features, however, its website can be quite scary and wordy to a new blogger. Much like Word. Press, the software will require installation onto a server. The account set up is slightly more lengthy than that of Word. Press, simply because many hosting sites such as Go. Daddy offer Word. Press installation with the click of a button. Joomla, on the other hand, needs to be installed directly onto the website’s server almost every time. Aside from that, Joomla is not specifically designed for blogging like Word. Press is. The site certainly allows for it but will require a special blog plug- in to be installed into the website. Drupal. Drupal is another open- source, community based content manager system. Drupal’s “Open and Ready to Use Blog”, is the easiest comparison to Word. Press. The tool, much like Blogger, allows for easy blog creation, social networking integration, and advertising capabilities. Each piece of information, such as a blog post, is stored in a particular block, which is placed according to the layout. Both Word. Press and Drupal offer a wide variety of plug- ins that are community created. So far Drupal has the largest community for plug- ins, but Word. Press is much easier for new users to understand and see the plug- in’s practical uses before installation. Live. Journal. Live. Journal is another blog host that is completely focused on blogging. Unlike Blogger, the site has stricter rules regarding content and its user base. For example, Live. Journal strives to keep a family- friendly atmosphere within the site’s community. This is one reason birthdays are recorded among registration and blog posts and comments need to be flagged if they contain mature content. While the site is very user friendly and blogs are relativity easy to set up and search, users who do not want to face these restrictions need to look elsewhere for their blog hosting. Much like Blogger, the site allows for quick and easy setup, but limits the users to templates that can be customized. While some of the templates are only available for paid accounts, the site offers far more templates than Blogger, but still not to the level that Word. Press does. How to Backup Blogs. There are several paid services that will backup any blog to a local disc drive effortlessly. Backup. My. Blog, for example, is a service that checks the blog it’s assigned to and copies the blog posts, photos and comments along with any special coding that has been added, such as HTML, allowing for the backup copy to be displayed properly. A free service alternative is Blog. Backupr, which creates backups for any blog that uses an RSS feed. Manual backups are also relatively easy with practice, although the procedure is different based on the type of blog server being used. Blogger has a very convenient export feature that creates a back up copy of the blog and places it onto the hard drive. To access this feature, simply click on the settings tab on the back panel. Under the section marked “Basic”, there will be an “Export Blog” link that creates the default XML backup. Joomla, like Word. Press, uses a My. SQL database to store its contents. Most people will have to use a tool to aid in the backup process, such as Akeeba. The backup creation will then have to be taken from the server and placed onto the hard drive via download. Drupal also uses a My. SQL database to store files. Because of this, a tool such as php. My. Admin can be used to create the backup, and then it can be downloaded onto the hard drive. Live. Journal is very user- friendly and offers a couple different backup methods. The first method is via the Direct Backup Page. Another method is to use the tool LJ Book or LJ Archive which downloads the journal onto the hard drive as a PDF. One more fool- proof method for a blog back up is to copy and paste the blog texts into a word processor and save them. While this will eliminate many of the basic designs and possibly any coding for the site, this is a useful method of backup for users planning on completely recreating their blogs. Comments can be copied using this method as well but they will lack the same formatting that can be seen with a direct backup using the methods above. Smaller blogs that do not add HTML or any other coding can greatly benefit from this method. Making the Switch. Creating a New Blog in the Word. Press Directory. Manual installs through the directory can be done using the command prompt. Use the following command to create a blog within the chosen directory. After the backup is complete, take the following steps to complete the process and convert your blog to Word. Press. Blogger, Live. Journal, and RSS Feeds. Both Blogger and Live. Journal have very easy integration into Word. Press, and the process is the same for each one. The methods can also be used on any other blog that uses an RSS feed, which is compatible with Joomla and Drupal. STEP 1: Sign into the Word. Press website dashboard. STEP 2: Click on the . There will be an option for import. STEP 3: Click on either the Blogger or Live. Journal link and a pop- up menu will appear. STEP 4: Select the “Install Now” option highlighted in red at the top right of the box. STEP 5: When the download information appears, there will be an option to “Activate Plugin & Run Importer”. Once clicked, another screen will appear. Click the “Activate” button. STEP 6: The browser will connect to a login screen. Fill out the login information for the account that needs to be connected, and submit. Then, grant access for Word. Press to access the account. STEP 7: Word. Press will then display how many blog posts and comments are available for import. They will not be added to the Word. Press website until the “Import” button is selected. Drupal Migration. Complete Drupal migration into Word. Press is much more complicated then Live. Journal or Blogger. The method involves some programming knowledge, including knowledge using My. SQL and PHP. Integration can usually be done in three steps. STEP 1: Install the Word. Press server in the database where Drupal is installed, allowing for both to be installed and running side- by- side temporarily. STEP 2: If need be, enable PHP using the /drupal/admin/settings/filters path on the Drupal portion of the database. STEP 3: Change the location of the Drupal database on the server. Joomla Migration. Joomla uses a plug- in option to integrate into the Word. Press website. This is very convenient and operates in a similar fashion as the Live. Journal and Blogger integration noted above.

Your well-being is our focus. 1991-2000 TMD/Orofacial Pain. 2008-2009 American Academy of Orofacial Pain Co-chairman, Ambassador Program Committee Chairman.Doctor, Why Wasn’t I Told This Before? To set up the premise and discussion points for this article we will begin simply with a description of 2 cases involving orofacial pain, and then describe the condition known as burning mouth syndrome (BMS). CASE 1. Mrs. F was seen at our university’s orofacial pain clinic with complaints of facial pain following a routine endodontic procedure.
Section on TMD, Cervical Spine and Orofacial Pain The Role of TMD. Graduated from an accredited Orofacial Pain Program. Doctor, Why Wasn’t I Told This Before? Category: Oral Medicine Created. He is a co-director of the orofacial pain graduate program and is director of the Orofacial Pain Clinic. Orofacial motor disorders including orofacial dystonias and bruxism; intraoral, intracranial. She explained that soon after root canal therapy on a lower molar, she began to experience tingling and then aching and burning pain in and around the tooth. It spread over her entire lower jaw and face. After retreatment of the en- dodontia, an extraction, then 2 more endodontic procedures, followed by one more extraction, she was finally referred for an orofacial pain evaluation. After 2 years of suffering and multiple procedures, she was diagnosed with a neuropathic pain disorder and treated successfully with medications. CASE 2. Ms. S is a 4. TMJ. She presented with a headache that she was sure could be relieved by a new “TMJ appliance.” The 3 devices she brought with her to the examination, carefully wrapped in a plastic sandwich bag, no longer were working. She was told by her physician to get a new one. After an extensive history and physical examination in our postdoctoral orofacial pain clinic, it was determined that her pain was not of dental or masticatory origin, but had characteristics of a new- onset headache disorder of a possibly ominous nature. A referral for brain imaging disclosed an intracranial lesion as the source of her complaints. She was immediately referred for medical management. Treating her for a temporomandibular disorder would have been inappropriate and dangerous, and would delay her from obtaining relief from her symptoms. An accurate diagnosis was required, and in this case could have been life saving. BURNING MOUTH SYNDROMEFigure 1. Taste is mediated by the facial (chorda tympani) nerve (CN- VII). Normally these nerves act together for a balanced sensation of nonpainful stimuli and taste. This results in a sense of burning in the absence of any observable intraoral lesions. In this case the intraoral burning, or burning mouth syndrome, is considered a neuropathic pain disorder. Another, and occasionally disabling, orofacial pain complaint is burning mouth syndrome (Figure 1). Affecting approximately 4. Figure 2) or systemic illness. Now perceived to be due to a dysfunction of the innervation regulating taste sensations, this perplexing disorder is under study by orofacial pain researchers around the world. Fortunately, although we are not clear on the mechanism of this disorder, there are effective treatments for managing BMS. Unfortunately, this knowledge is not widespread among clinicians who tend to see this population of patients. The most important factor in effective treatment of BMS, or any other orofacial pain condition, is an accurate diagnosis. All too often we see BMS patients who tell us, “I was told I was depressed,” “I was told to learn to live with it,” or the worst, “There is nothing wrong with you. It’s all in your head.” These unfortunate misstatements by physicians and dentists not trained in orofacial pain take the last bit of hope from the suffering patient. We can, however, offer these patients hope, as effective treatments are well- represented in the literature, even if mechanisms of BMS remain obscure. Of course, you can’t find what you don’t look for. Matthew Lark, president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, encourages dentists to seek the help of an orofacial pain practitioner when confronted with patients with unusual orofacial pain conditions. DISCUSSIONStudies of chronic orofacial pain patients such as these find that these patients, prior to seeing an orofacial pain dentist, have seen an average of more than 5 other healthcare providers and have suffered their pain complaints for more than 4 years. The failure to diagnose and treat these patients results in substantial disability and suffering. In these, and countless other similar cases, we are often asked, “Why didn’t someone tell me this before? Why didn’t my physician or dentist know where to refer me?” We don’t have answers to these questions despite the fact that there are hundreds of orofacial pain dentists throughout the United States, as well as specialties in orofacial pain in many countries around the world. Orofacial pain is a collective term used for a number of complex orofacial pain and dysfunction disorders, which include neuropathic pain, nonodontogenic tooth pain, musculoskeletal pain, neurovascular pain, referred pain, headache, oromotor dysfunction, and mandibular behavioral disorders, resulting in symptoms of chronic head, neck, and orofacial pain. The most common orofacial pain disorder involves temporomandibular disorders, but is commonly overlaid by other chronic complex pain conditions. Historically, patients with complex chronic orofacial pain have not received adequate treatment by any medical or dental discipline, and these patients are often confused about whom to see for their pain. These patients often fall into the gray area where dentistry ends and medical disciplines begin. Generally, healthcare providers do not know who has the qualifications to treat these patients effectively. Although most dentists and physicians see orofacial pain patients, many will enlist the expertise of someone with additional training in orofacial pain. A survey of 4. 05 dentists found 9. They also support orofacial pain becoming an ADA specialty by a ratio of 6: 1. Another survey found that 5. ADA- recognized specialty. This broad support to recognize orofacial pain as a specialty may in part be due to orofacial pain diagnoses and therapies now being taught in most predoctoral and postdoctoral dental schools’ programs. Numerous other countries, including Brazil, Sweden, Korea, Costa Rica, and Thailand, have already designated orofacial pain as a dental specialty. In the United States alone, 7% of the US population (more than 1. More than 3 million people annually seek treatment for chronic orofacial pain, with over 3. Fortunately, dentistry has taken the lead in providing care for patients suffering from these conditions by developing the field of orofacial pain in the United States. Dental universities have responded to this critical need by developing 1. United States and Canada, from which many orofacial pain experts graduate each year. Universities have established orofacial pain clinics in nearly every dental school and created 2- year advanced programs in 1. Major dental organizations, such as the American Association of Dental Schools, recognize orofacial pain, and the United States Armed Forces has established orofacial pain as an advanced field of dentistry. Scientific advances are progressing at a rapid pace due to our improved understanding of orofacial pain, its epidemiology, and its treatment. The American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP) has established a rigorous examination and credentialing process for orofacial pain dentists to certify their knowledge and capabilities. More than 3. 00 dentists in the United States and abroad have obtained their ABOP Diplomate in Orofacial Pain status and are focusing their careers on orofacial pain. If orofacial pain were to become an ADA- recognized specialty, then providers and patients would be able to identify a qualified orofacial pain specialist to utilize the broad- based diagnoses and interdisciplinary treatment necessary for these chronic, complex orofacial pain patients. As these providers demonstrate the ability to provide cost- effective therapy, insurers are more likely to offer policies that provide coverage for orofacial pain. CONCLUSIONStrategies and educational programs are in place to provide clinicians with a basis for providing scientifically based diagnosis and management of orofacial pain disorders. With recognition of this emerging field in dentistry we can ensure the quality of care provided by properly trained clinicians, improve patient therapeutic outcomes, enhance patients’ quality of life, and reduce inappropriate recommendations and treatment. Retail is one of the top industries in the world, employing over 15 million people in the U.S, alone. The wine has to be served by the bottle and it has to come from a local vineyard. And wine is the only alcohol that can be served. Mangone wishes he had more options, but that would require him to buy a liquor license. And that’s not likely to happen. Mangone — like many other restaurant owners across the state — said buying a liquor license is not a realistic possibility because of the regulative red tape, the lack of license availability in some communities and potential overall costs that could reach six figures and more. That may be changing. Last year, Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D- West Deptford) introduced a long- awaited overhaul bill that some proponents have referred to as a “common sense” approach to updating what they deem to be a set of archaic state liquor laws. The measure, which has huge implications for New Jersey’s real estate development community, didn’t see the voting floor in previous sessions. Burzichelli, however, says he plans to formally roll out a new version of the bill next month, one that will give municipalities a little more say in the matter, among other provisions. The bill, which is an attempt to address one of the most contentious business issues in the state, would cause quite a commotion if it gets to the floor. Burzichelli said it’s time to finally have it out on the issue.“The idea is to bring a new economy to life and to make commerce available where it presently isn’t,” he said.# # #Currently, municipalities issue liquor licenses based on population. New licenses are limited to one per every 3,0. Which is one of the problems. There is a finite number of licenses. Under Burzichelli’s bill, there would be an unlimited number of restricted licenses — available at a reduced cost. With these licenses, restaurants would not be subject to the population restriction. Instead, they will follow a new set of rules, such as mandating that they operate a full- service kitchen, do not operate a walk- up bar, begin serving liquor no earlier than noon and stop serving no later than 1. Sunday through Thursday and 1. The remainder would go to the state in order to offset the costs associated with issuing tax credits to full license holders. A license to just sell wine and beer, given that restaurants meet similar requirements, would also be available under Burzichelli’s bill at a reduced cost, ranging from $1,5. Burzichelli said his interest in the bill was sparked by his time on the Red Tape Review Commission and an interest throughout his career to “make New Jersey a more competitive place for business.”“In this particular area, I know firsthand restaurant entrepreneurs that have had a harder time succeeding and some that have failed because they did not have that revenue stream that the sale of alcoholic beverages provides to a restaurant owner,” Burzichelli said. Kapas Real Estate, said the threat of devaluation is very real, especially in areas such as Montclair where license prices have soared.“What happens to all those people that have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars?” said Kapas, whose firm specializes in restaurant transactions. Fun and games (and beer)Here’s at least one type of liquor law reform you might not have to wait around for. Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill late last year that would allow businesses to hold both a liquor license and a license to operate amusement games, paving the way for the state to attract national restaurant and entertainment chain Dave & Buster’s. Businesses had previously been prohibited from simultaneously holding both licenses under a 1. The new law now makes it possible for a business to hold both permits as long as the operating facility is at least 2. The size provisions built into the law are a clear nod to the popular chain, which is reportedly eyeing entry into the New Jersey market and had previously unsuccessfully attempted to secure a waiver to operate from the Games of Chance Control Commission.“The only thing that was standing between a multimillion- dollar job creator like Dave and Buster’s — which is interested in opening multiple locations here as soon as possible — and the state of New Jersey was one outdated law,” said Assemblyman and bill sponsor Joseph Lagana (D- Paramus).” No other state in the country had that ban, and the bottom line is that it simply made New Jersey less competitive. This new law helps make our state more business- friendly and opens the door to new jobs.”Lagana said that neighboring states like New York and Pennsylvania have been collecting millions in tax revenue from their multiple Dave & Buster’s locations.“New Jersey ought to be welcoming companies that want to establish themselves here, not keeping up a decades- old barrier to new businesses, jobs and tax revenues,” said Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (D- Jersey City), also a bill sponsor. Liquor License For Sale In Red Bank Nj MapCompensation from the state. Burzichelli said his bill calls for qualified holders to receive a credit, equal to 1. The credit would be issued in annual installments over a five- year period. Booking: Josh @ Monterey International (North America) Kalle @ Pitch and Smith (Europe) Management: Portia @ Shotclock Management. This compensation would be paid for by increased revenue from the increased licenses. But while some early projections show that the bill could lead to about $1 billion in new local and state revenues and the creation of some 1. Burzichelli himself has recognized in the past that his bill may lead to a slight devaluation of existing licenses, but that’s why he’s hoping those stakeholders will recognize that some concessions are being made to honor that.“I think those of us who are advocating for this are on the right side of this issue and I think that we are conducting ourselves properly by saying upfront that there has to be a degree of compensation in place for these existing license holders under certain circumstances,” he said.# # #The exterior of Chambers Walk Cafe and Catering in Lawrenceville. The bill’s impact will reach a lot more than just those in the hospitality sector. Developers say the bill has the potential to be a game changer.“The real estate community has examined this issue for about two years, and the simple fact is that change is inevitable,” said Anthony Pizzutillo, a partner at Smith Pizzutillo LLC, who represents the commercial real estate group NAIOP New Jersey. George Jacobs, president of Clifton- based Jacobs Enterprises, said restaurants and real estate development are becoming increasingly intertwined and the availability of liquor licenses in a given area is always a focal point.“Restaurants have been functioning as really the anchor of a lot of different projects recently,” Jacobs said. The way the assemblyman has designed the bill, we think the impact on most larger restaurants will be negligible, but the impact on the downtown redevelopment scene will be extraordinary.”Jacobs sees a scenario unfolding in New Jersey’s downtowns in which the added competition of more restaurants serving alcohol will lend itself to increased patronage across the board.“You can see how the rising tide lifts all ships when you look at downtowns like Morristown,” Jacobs said. But they put in Roots (Steakhouse) with liquor and a lot of other restaurants have grown up around it.”More could be coming, Jacobs said.“With this new license, every one of those restaurants will have an option that’s not available to them right now,” he said.# # #New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association President Marilou Halvorsen said the issue isn’t so black and white.“I certainly applaud the Assemblyman’s acknowledgement of the investment that current licensees have taken and he’s trying to address that compensation is a part of it, but the reality is that there are some problems,” she said. Halvorsen questions the state’s ability to fund the compensation program and cites other concerns, such as credit mortgages tied to devalued licenses, which could have “serious financial repercussions on license holders.”New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association President Marilou Halvorsen.“I absolutely think that the assemblyman was the first person, with any kind of liquor license reform, to formally acknowledge the investment,” Halvorsen said. But how that would play out, I think, has been kind of a concern and that’s something that we have been talking about internally within membership and in the industry.”Halvorsen also wonders if New Jersey would be better served implementing the new license program with more of a surgical, slower approach to start, rather than opening the floodgates across the state following such a major overhaul. Even with about 6. NJRHA’s decision to not take an official stance on the bill last spring was rooted more in its desire for additional answers and research on the issue, rather than straight opposition. Halvorsen said she’s been receiving constructive feedback from members on both sides of the licensing matter and that Burzichelli has also been an active listener.“We are trying to be fair and balanced,” Halvorsen said. And he knows the issues. That why the bill he will introduce soon is different than ones he has tried to bring to a vote before. The major difference between then and now? An added provision that had been suggested by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities that would allow towns to opt in to the program. As the bill was previously written, municipalities were required to abide by the new liquor license parameters until they chose to opt out, if they wanted to do so. But that time frame, which is still being discussed, will be limited, Burzichelli said.“Along with that, we’re going to say to the municipalities that if you don’t opt in within a period of time, probably in the three- year range, that after that period expires, then the equity protection that will be accorded to your existing license owners will not be available to that municipality,” he said. However, our inventory changes frequently. Baker & Taylor, Inc.In fact, they’ve become as much a part of students’ everyday lives as their notebooks, backpacks, and textbooks. Our students aren’t the only ones who’ve gotten into the i. Pad act. Our AP environmental science teacher has had his students take i. Pads along on field trips so they can use free apps, such as Leaf. Snap and i. Birds, to chart their surroundings. Our computer science teacher showed his class how to create their own apps, and our American Sign Language class uses the i. Pad’s camera to Skype with their peers at the Texas School for the Deaf. And to cut down on the amount of paper we consume, our English, math, and science teachers post their assignments as PDFs, which their students can view on their i. Pads, instead of printing them. That simple decision has already saved our campus more than $3. How’d we get to this point? It all began in the fall of 2. Pads. Why i. Pads? I’m a gadget head and a librarian, and when I first used one, I sensed that they had great potential for learning and that they could revolutionize our students’ access to information—and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one again. We started small, purchasing the tablets with money that we’d raised. And since our administrators were eager to see how the devices could be used to promote learning in the library and in the classroom, I set up a pilot program to gather data, using Google Forms to create a series of surveys and questionnaires for our teachers to chart the effectiveness of using i. Pads with their students. I also encouraged my teaching colleagues to take the devices home on weekends and try them in their classrooms during the school week. And I helped them plan how to use the i. Pad’s preloaded apps in their lessons. As it turned out, our teachers’ responses to these devices were unanimously positive. Beyond liking the obvious conveniences of the device’s mobility and apps, one of our teachers remarked that “an i. Pad levels the playing field for all of my students—from special ed to general ed to gifted.”We also included a wide range of students in our pilot program, and gathered information on the ease of accessing databases and using the devices to read various texts. As you might imagine—especially two years ago, when the i. Pad was first released—our kids were thrilled to use them. One student (with an eye to the future?) even pointed out that the devices might ultimately save space in the library. And it was especially gratifying to see our most physically challenged students adeptly using the tablets to gain access to all sorts of things that had previously been inaccessible to them.
We also read about how other schools had successfully used i. Pads. They were so enthusiastic about our pilot program that we ultimately sent a district team to Apple’s headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, to learn more about 1: 1 i. Pad programs in schools, and we soon decided to expand our own program as a way to help students prepare for the ubiquitous devices they’d encounter in college. Ready, set, swipe. To apply for the new program, teachers were asked to describe how they planned to use the i. Pads in their classrooms. After our principal reviewed their applications, she chose 4. WIFI (Westlake Initiative for Innovation) pilot program, which also included 1,6. Pads, along with the rest of our teachers. Since I was familiar with our school’s overall curriculum, our campus technology coordinator and I investigated apps that would be useful in a variety of subject areas. We searched for note- taking apps (such as Audio. Note, Sundry Note, and Penultimate), PDF annotation apps (like Neu. Bluefire), apps for special education students (Dragon Dictation and Tap to Talk), and many more. Along with those that our teachers recommended, we created a list of apps to include on our i. Pads (for more details about the program, visit our blog at www. I created with our district technology director to document the process). Many of the apps were free, and we also went through Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program, a special plan for schools that reduces the cost of apps by 5. We primarily used state technology funds to purchase our apps, and bond money allocated for technology to pay for our i. Pads. And JAMF Software’s Casper Suite gave our information services (IT) department the ability to manage the i. Pad inventory, tracking, etc., which made it possible to retrieve devices that our students had misplaced. During the summer, our teachers could pick up their i. Pads early if they attended a brief introductory training session; our juniors and seniors had to wait until the third day of the new school year to receive theirs. You should have seen their faces when we handed them their i. Pads, and their enthusiasm was contagious. The library was absolutely buzzing as they explored the apps, started using them on assignments, and got creative with the cameras. Suddenly these students weren’t being told to put away their devices—they were actually being encouraged to use them in the library and in class for learning, creating projects, and organizing their lives. It’s a major challenge for teachers to move from a classroom with no electronic devices (other than those on a library laptop cart) to an environment in which mobile devices are constantly available. And as more and more teachers dropped by the library, it became obvious that they needed our support to navigate the new devices. Thanks to our previous experience with i. Pads, the library staff was able to assist teachers with technical help and curriculum support from the get- go. Caf. We removed unused bookcases, installed USB power strips, and added window- side caf. We also added district- built mini Plexiglas boards where students could post messages and recommendations. The revamped space is perfect for the tech- support staff to help students; after- school “Appy Hours,” led by our district technology coordinator; and individual planning sessions with teachers. To help teachers expand their i. Pad repertoires, I brought in consultant Dean Shareski for a daylong workshop on incorporating photography apps into lessons. Showing teachers that it’s not really about “the app”—it’s about using these applications to enhance a well- thought- out, purposeful lesson. Now that the help desk is located in the library, my library assistants and I have became busy troubleshooters—doing everything from giving out passwords to showing kids how to edit an i. Movie or offering a quick tutorial on using the Web. Dav app to access their home folders on our Novell network. At lunchtime, the desk is staffed by members of our IT staff and student mentors, who have also been a huge help. How has this technology affected our campus? One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed is that there’s a stronger spirit of collaboration as we all learn how to use apps to support our instructional goals. Teachers are constantly helping other teachers; as the librarian, I’m helping the technology team; students help their peers and their teachers. For instance, the tech crew, library staff, and teachers have all pitched in to lead our lunchtime workshops, including an AP environmental science teacher who offered to teach Flubaroo, a script for Google Forms that self- grades tests. Now that we have i. Pads, I’ve also had to grapple with providing our kids with ebooks that’ll work effectively on their devices. To make sure I’m up to speed in this area, I’ve made a concerted effort to attend webinars and conference sessions, read articles, and test ebook products. Although I know things are constantly changing, we currently offer ebooks through Overdrive, Follett Shelf, and Gale Virtual Reference Library. And we’re also considering using Mackin Via, Baker and Taylor’s Axis 3. Brain. Hive (full disclosure: I’m an advisor on this product), among others. There are a lot of informed decisions that need to be made regarding ebooks, but they all begin with understanding the purpose for which you plan to use the materials. With our students having i. Pads, QR codes have become a handy way to get ebook information, surveys, and other necessary messages to them. Using apps such as QR Code Reader or Scan, students can scan QR codes posted in the library to access our database lists, ebook apps, or book reviews. Since we started using QR codes in the library, they’ve really caught on: our student council posts them in the hallways to spread the word about blood drives, teachers post them beside their doorways with links to their websites and homework pages, and more. Our English AP students used Pages to storyboard a research project they were doing in the library. Our sophomore English students used photo apps to create a “one word, one image” depiction of a character from a novel. Geography classes use the Zapd app for blogging projects. Our French students filmed skits, as did our Latin students; and ASL students use the i. Pad’s camera for recording responses to quizzes, Skyping with classes at other schools, and practicing their signing. Our English classes use ebooks for their reading time, and free classic ebooks from Project Gutenberg for classroom annotations of novels they’re studying, using apps such as neu. Good. Reader that allow them to write on PDF files. I recently met with our sophomore English teachers who are planning to use the Pulse app to help students create a personalized RSS “reader” of articles they’re passionate about for a new blog project. Knowledge about the way of the Soul is important, but only personal effort and practice will make it REAL for you- or in other words, bring about your own Soul “real”ization. Their writings and teachings are the basis of every major religion, but the true Way of the Soul transcends all dividing lines of religion and unifies us all as human beings. I believe that the Way of The Soul is a very PRACTICAL way that is best practiced and realized right in the thick of daily living with others- not by retreating away from the world. I strive to make whatever I share ACCESSIBLE, and PRACTICAL so that it can be applied in your life right now, right where you are. The fruits of cultivating the Way of the Soul in your life are many- including greater peace of mind, resilience, joyful living, better quality relationships, better health, and generally a more fulfilling life. Likewise, all dissatisfaction in life can ultimately be traced to ignorance of The Way of the Soul, which is really the common human pathology and responsible for all the disharmony, unhappiness and misery in the world.
